Quebec Premier François Legault will officially meet his new federal counterpart Mark Carney for the first time on Sunday.

Legault’s office announced the news late Saturday afternoon.

According to the news release, the meeting will take place at 2:45 p.m. in Montreal.

It will be closed to the media.

After Carney’s victory at the Liberal Party of Canada convention last Sunday, Legault congratulated him. At the time he said that he saw in him an ally in the face of the onslaught from the U.S. administration.

“We will all have to pull together and work together to protect the economy against Donald Trump’s tariffs, and I am convinced that Mr. Carney will be an ally in this fight,” he wrote on X on Sunday evening.

Legault reiterated that Canada and Quebec would be facing “major” challenges in the coming months.

Following U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminium, Legault asked the new prime minister on Tuesday to “convene a meeting with the premiers of the provinces and territories to better coordinate Canada’s approach to this new increase in tariffs on steel and aluminium.”
