Woman dead after major apartment fire in Montreal’s Anjou borough

Several people were taken to the hsopital after an apartment fire in Montreal's Anjou borough.

A woman died and a man was badly injured after a major apartment fire in Montreal’s Anjou borough.

Montreal police (SPVM) said a 911 call came in at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday about the blaze on the corner of Place d’Antioche and Saint-Zotique Street.

The Montreal fire department (SIM) said around a dozen apartments in the three-storey residential building were affected by the fire and around 30 sustained water damage.

The fire started on the third floor, they said.

Five people were taken to the hospital, including a firefighter.

Two were sent to hospital in critical condition after they suffered burns and smoke inhalation, authorities said. One is a 78-year-old woman, and the other is a 79-year-old man.

The man’s life is no longer in danger, Montreal police said. The other three victims suffered smoke inhalation.

Police did not confirm how the fire was started.

The Montreal fire department (SIM) issued a fourth alarm shortly after 10 a.m.
