Former Montreal Jewish General Hospital doctor seeking bail on sexual assault charges

Published:

Stephan Probst is facing charges of sexually assaulting seven women over an 18-year period and is seeking to be released on bail.

The former head of the nuclear medicine department at Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital was back in court Thursday for bail hearings following a second arrest.

Stephan Probst is facing charges of sexually assaulting seven women over an 18-year period. Many details of the case are under publication ban.

The prosecutor laid out the new evidence against the former doctor to convince the judge not to release Probst while awaiting trial. Members of Probst’s entourage came to court to help the defence make the case for his release.

Probst was already out on bail when he was arrested again last week, complicating the case.

Last August, he and his girlfriend were found guilty of drugging and sexually abusing a woman the couple had met online.

Probst had convinced the court to release him on bail while awaiting his sentence and filing his appeal.

After Probst’s conviction made headlines, more women came forward with similar stories of abuse, leading to his re-arrest.

The prosecution not only wants Probst’s earlier bail revoked but also wants to make sure he remains behind bars until the trial.

The case will resume in court Friday.
