Quebec provincial police (SQ) arrested 16 suspects on Wednesday in connection with a fraud operation where the majority of the victims were seniors.
The SQ said in a news release that six of the suspects would appear in court in Trois-Rivieres and Laval on Wednesday, and the others were released on conditions.
Police say the arrests were made in connection with more than 250 fraud cases, involving more than $1 million. The average age of the 214 victims was 79.
“The suspects used call-hosting software to modify the information displayed on the screen, posing as well-known institutions or even police officers, in order to cheat their victims out of money,” the release said.
More than 90 investigators were involved in the operation, which was launched in 2022.
Police reminded people to take the time to check a person’s identity on a call. If unsure, police say to hang up and call the institution’s official number or call the police.
If you feel that you’re a victim of fraud, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre says to contact your financial institution, contact the police, report the incident and tell family and friends about the experience in the hopes of preventing further crimes.
