Quarterback Taylor Elgersma of London, Ont. impresses NFL scouts at Senior Bowl

Published:

London, Ont. quarterback Taylor Elgersma competed in front of NFL scouts this past weekend at the Senior Bowl.

Taylor Elgersma came into the Reese’s Senior Bowl as a “mystery quarterback from Canada,” but proved he belonged with the top NFL prospects.

The London, Ont. native - who won the Hec Creighton Award as the top player in U Sports football - entered the second half of the all-star game for the National team.

After taking some heavy defensive pressure on his first series, he produced a highlight for those watching on NFL Network during his second drive.

The six-foot-six QB from Wilfrid Laurier University threw a deep ball down the left side and it was dropped into a bucket to University of Illinois receiver Pat Bryant for a 43-yard gain.

Elgersma would play a few more series throughout the half and finished by completing four-of-seven passes for 57 yards, although two of his incompletions could have been caught.

Former Western University QB and current WLU head coach Michael Faulds accompanied player on the trip to Mobile, Ala.

He posted to social media how impressed he was with the 43-yard throw.

“Without a doubt, this was the very best throw of the game!!” wrote Faulds.

“An NFL team needs to draft/sign Taylor. He will immediately enter the building and be your hardest and smartest worker.”

The London Oakridge grad’s performance also caught the eye of NFL Network analysts with David Carr saying he “handled himself really well.”

He met with all 32 NFL teams during the week of practices and is still awaiting word on whether he’ll be invited to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana later this month.

If he is selected in this year’s NFL Draft, he would be the first U Sports QB picked since Dan Feraday of the University of Toronto was picked in the 12th round in 1982 by the Cincinnati Bengals.

He’s no stranger to making history, as he was the first QB from a Canadian university to suit-up in the Senior Bowl.
