Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for much of southern Ontario this weekend.

In a region that stretches from Windsor to Owen Sound, Environment Canada says that significant rainfall is possible this weekend.

As temperatures have been cold as of late, the frozen ground will likely be unable to absorb the 20 to 40 mm of rain projected in the region, with locally higher amounts possible.

Heavy rain is expected Saturday night and into Sunday, with a risk of thunderstorms, localised flooding in low-lying areas, and water pooling on roads.

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority stated on Monday that there is potential, particularly on the North Thames River for more serious flooding. Flood control reservoirs have been operated this week to allow for more storage this weekend in the event of large amounts of rain and snowmelt.
