A Guelph man has been arrested after police said he took another man to an apartment and assaulted him with a machete over an outstanding debt.

The Guelph Police Service was told the incident happened on the afternoon of Feb. 26, but the victim chose not to tell police about it until Tuesday.

The victim told police he was confronted by a man in downtown Guelph. He said he owed the man money. Investigators said the victim was taken to an apartment, hit in the face and had a machete held to his throat. The suspect also cut his leg with the weapon.

The victim came forward on Tuesday after he received a threatening phone call from the other man.

A 23-year-old Guelph man was arrested downtown on Wednesday. He resisted arrest and kicked an officer in the leg at the police station. He has been charged with several assault, weapons and threat related charges.
