Minnie Elizabeth Hurley, known as “Mindy” to most, died last week at the age of 100.
Hurley was born in Newfoundland in 1924 and made Waterloo Region her home in her adult years.
She was a well-known volunteer in the community, especially at St. John’s Anglican Church in Kitchener, where she helped make Christmas pudding since the late 1940s.
She also appeared on CTV Kitchener several times.
Her first appearance was in 2018, when she talked about her love for the pudding tradition.
Then she became the star of several stories by CTV’s Jeff Pickel
“They said I should be helping out with the pudding and that’s what happened I got stuck with it and I’m still doing it,” she told Pickel in 2022.
A month later, Pickel talked to her about her other favourite tradition: watching Sunday football at Morty’s Pub in Waterloo.
“You’ve got to have a little bit of everything in life, really, church and the pub. Get happy at church, get happy at the pub, that’s it,” Hurley said in Dec. 2022.

Most recently, in Nov. 2024, CTV caught up with Hurley, once again working hard producing pudding for the church.
She’s found many friends along the way like Bette Moore who is 96-years-old.
Hurley said the church community is how she kept an active social life for so many years.
“It’s very important, that’s where I got a lot of beautiful friends that keep me going,” said Hurley in 2024.

In an obituary for Hurley, her family said she passed while on Vancouver Island.
“Our beloved Mindy is off on another venture. This time it will be with the Lord,” the obituary read.
Her family said prayers for her journey will be included in the May 11 mass at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church.
The family is asking for donations to the church or the Cancer Society of Canada.
