It is not unusual for helicopters to fly over Waterloo Region, but rarely do three of them travel together.
The trio were spotted in the sky on Tuesday.
It sparked a lot of online discussion, with photos and videos showing the black helicopters as they passed overhead.
CTV News reached out to the Canadian Armed Forces to find out what was going on.
A representative confirmed the helicopters belonged to their Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) and, specifically, the 427 Special Operations Aviation Squadron.
According to the federal government, the unit provides “dedicated special operations aviation effects as part of high-readiness Special Operations Task Forces for domestic and international operations.”
CTV News was told the helicopters flew over Waterloo Region on their way back to their base in Petawawa.
While no details were shared about where they were coming from, the CAF said they were likely returning home after a training exercise.
