How much sunshine will we get to start the week?

Southern Ontario is in for a big seasonal swing.

After a weeks of winter weather, we’re about to take a hard turn into spring.

Environment Canada is predicting significant rain across the province starting Tuesday night and into Wednesday. Southern parts of the province expected to get 10 to 20 millimetres and, further north, as much as 25 millimetres.

Isolated thunderstorms are also possible.

The weather service has issued a special weather statement for most of southern Ontario and parts of Quebec. The statement warns the frozen ground may not be able to absorb the rain once it begins to fall.

The daytime high in Waterloo Region is expected to hit 5 Celsius on Tuesday and stay relatively mild overnight, with a low of 3 Celsius. Wednesday is expected to feel even warmer, with a high of 8 Celsius during the day.

Those warmer temperatures are sure to make for a messy Wednesday.

“This rainfall, combined with melting snow and the limited ability of the frozen ground to absorb the rain may lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas and water pooling on roads,” Environment Canada said in a statement.

The Grand River Conservation Authority has already issued a flood watch for the entirety of the watershed.

The spring-like weather, however, won’t stick around long. Environment Canada said temperatures will drop below zero and there’s a chance of flurries later this week.
