Organizers say it’s important to acknowledge the past and advocate for change.
“Sometimes we lose the value of what black individuals and our history has created for the City of Edmonton and for Alberta,” said Nigel Williams with the National Black Coalition of Canada.
“Having a celebration like this allows us a reminder of where we’re going, where we came from and how we’re going to do it next.”
Black History Month is recognized every February.
The city is also working with Africa Centre, the Edmonton Community Foundation and the Edmonton Heritage Council on the Black History Month Initiative Fund.
The funds support community organizations hosting commemorative events and activities throughout the month.
The national theme for Black History Month this year is ‘Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations.’
“Celebrating this right now is excellent because we have excellence in our society, and in our culture and our diversity,” Williams said.
“We need to learn about each other so we’re not worried about being afraid of each other, but we’re learning to prosper as we go forward with Black history.”
The city is hosting events from brunches, art shows and more throughout the month.
