Some parts of Edmonton have already had more than 20 cm of snow: reports

Published:

Many parts of Edmonton received up to 20 cm of snow on Thursday.

Steady snow across north-central Alberta, and particularly along the Highway 16 corridor, has been falling all day and won’t completely end until early Friday.

Unofficial reports from around the city show roughly 10 to 20 cms of snow up to 3 p.m., which is getting close to the record for the heaviest one-day March snowfall.

Edmonton saw 23 cms of snow accumulate on March 30, 1955.

We’ll get the official snowfall total for today from Environment and Climate Change Canada Friday morning.

Most of the main arterial roads are more wet than snow-covered, but that’s likely to change tonight as temperatures continue to drop and traffic decreases.

As of 3 p.m. on Thursday, 93 people had reported crashes within the city, four of those were injury collisions.

Edmonton saw temperatures slide from slightly above 0 C early this morning to the -4 C range this afternoon.

That cooler air will stick around for several days with mornings in the -8 C to -14 C range with daytime highs Friday and through the weekend in the -1 to -4 range.

Milder temperatures are expected to return by early to mid next week.
