Mounties in west-central Alberta issued warnings on Thursday about poor highway conditions.

Fox Creek RCMP said crews were responding to multiple crashes on Highway 43 near Two Creeks, Alta., on Thursday afternoon and called icy road conditions a “significant factor.”

As of 3:30 p.m. MT crews were still working to clear vehicles off the highway, and shared a message for semi drivers.

“Take the time to chain up in these conditions, the hills can be quite slippery and there is no chance of stopping,” Sgt. Andrew Brand said.

Police say they have also had to deal with drivers on cell phones as they pass emergency responders, noting one violation ticket has already been handed out.

“We will do more if we have to,” Brand added.

A semi driver also received a ticket for following too closely and not driving for the conditions.

Police did not note any injuries.

RCMP in Evansburg, about 200 kilometres southeast of Fox Creek, also reported traffic issues because of road conditions.

At least one semi-truck jackknifed on Highway 16 between Evansburg and Gainford and another slid off the road.

Numerous other vehicles were also reported to be in the ditch.

No injuries were reported.
