The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the death of a man in RCMP custody.

Police were called for a report of an intoxicated man in St. Paul, Alta., on March 18.

The man was arrested and placed into a police holding cell at 9:30 p.m.

At 10:25 a.m. the next morning, the man was found unresponsive in the cell.

Life-saving measures were attempted by EMS, but he was declared dead a short time later.

ASIRT will examine the care of the man while he was in custody.

The agency investigates any incident involving Alberta police that leads to serious injury, death or sensitive allegations.

St. Paul is about 200 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
