Man accused in Alberta Avenue arsons will stand trial after application to dismiss charges denied

Published:

The trial for a man accused in multiple arsons on Alberta Avenue will continue this spring. CTV News Edmonton's Amanda Anderson has the latest.

A Jordan application filed by a man charged in connection with a rash of arsons in the Alberta Avenue area has been dismissed.

A lawyer for Darcy Willier filed the application alleging that Willier’s charges had not been heard in court in a timely manner.

Willier is charged with multiple counts of arson, arson with disregard for human life as well as firearms charges in connection with multiple deliberately set fires in the Alberta Avenue area in 2021 and 2022.

If the Jordan application had been granted, Willier would have walked free.

A judge found there were more than five months of delays attributed to Willier’s defence team, which caused the delay in Willier’s trial.

As such, the application was denied.

His trial will proceed later this spring.
