Police in the Edmonton area are asking drivers to slow down on Wednesday as hundreds of drivers have reported crashes in the capital city.

On Tuesday 241 people reported collisions, according to the Edmonton Collision Reporting Centre. Thirty-five people have reported collisions on Wednesday as of 10 a.m.

Strathcona RCMP are warning drivers to slow down and adjust their driving amid “poor road conditions.”

RCMP say winter weather can pose safety risks for drivers and pedestrians on roads. They’re asking people to consider some tips to stay safe:

  • Ensure snow is cleared from all windows and lights on your car;
  • Reduce speed to give yourself more time to slow down and stop;
  • Plan extra time to get to your destination; and
  • Pack blankets or a winter survival kit, especially if you’re planning a trip outside of town.

The Edmonton area saw heavy gusty winds on Tuesday in the 50-70 km/h range. Wind conditions on Wednesday are expected to die down a bit before returning on Thursday and Friday.
