‘Dangerous and unpredictable’: Avalanche warning issued for Jasper, other parts of Alberta

Published:

Avalanche Canada and the province are warning people to be careful in the Rockies over the weekend.

An avalanche warning is in place for Jasper National Park and other parts of Alberta until Monday.

The warning, issued by Avalanche Canada, is in place for:

  • Jasper National Park
  • Kananaskis Country
  • Banff National Park

In British Columbia, Kootenay National Park and Yoho National Park are also under the same warning.

“All backcountry users should educate themselves on avalanche terrain, avalanche safety equipment and companion rescue, and stay up to date on advisories and warnings in the area,” Forestry and Parks Minister Todd Loewen said in a news release. ”Taking the time to fully prepare yourself and avoid dangerous avalanche conditions will help keep you and those around you safe.”

There have been a number of large avalanches in the Rockies over the past two weeks and two people have been killed.

According to the Alberta government, the snowpack in the listed areas is “dangerous and unpredictable.”

People going to avalanche terrain this weekend are advised to have essential rescue gear and training for it.

Avalanche Canada recommends sticking to lower-angle slopes, travelling one at a time in avalanche terrain and avoiding sun-exposed slopes during warm and sunny conditions.
