‘Armed and dangerous’ man arrested 1 week after public alerted

RCMP have arrested a man who prompted a police warning on Feb. 1.

Derrick Phazar Whitford, 27, was wanted in connection with the killing of 18-year-old O’Chiese First Nation resident Travis Strawberry.

On Saturday, RCMP warned Whitford was believed to be armed and dangerous and should not be approached. He was arrested on Friday without incident.

Strawberry was killed on O’Chiese First Nation in November 2024, and his body was found in a wooded area in Clearwater County.

Whitford was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death. At the time he was charged, he was also wanted on several other unrelated offences including breach of probation, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer, robbery and firearm offences.
