Warm and sunny to kick off the first weekend of spring!

Chinook conditions will help with the warm up. Gina Martin has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

A cloudy start to Friday but chinook winds will be out in full force this afternoon getting Calgary to a double-digit high of 10 C with a sunny sky.

Winds this afternoon in the city are forecast to be between 30 to 50 km/h. The Lethbridge area could experience westerly winds between 50 to 70 km/h.

In order for chinooks to form, you initially need moisture laden clouds on the west side of the Rockies.

A low pressure system is delivering those conditions, which could benefit spring skiing enthusiasts.

Before the clouds dry out as they approach Calgary, they could drop some wet snow over the higher elevations like Banff and Canmore.

It is difficult to determine snowfall totals though.

There is a chance Calgary could see some wet weather over the weekend too.

Saturday is shaping up to start of clear and sunny, but the previously mentioned low spans a wide range and could bring the potential for some very brief rain/snow showers for Calgary on Saturday afternoon, and then potentially again Sunday evening.

As this system progresses eastward, it’s getting weaker and more disorganized, so it’s tricky to forecast any precipitation with high confidence. But better to have it on your radar than not!
