After 15 years as Calgary city councillor, Peter Demong is calling it quits.
Demong made the announcement on social media on Monday, saying that it’s time for a change in his life.
“With all the emotion that comes with ending a significant chapter of one’s life, I am writing to tell you that this will be my last term serving as your municipal representative. I will not be running in the upcoming civic election,” he said.
In his statement, he thanked his constituents for giving him the opportunity to help shape the future of the city and improve city operations.
He also thanked his wife and family, his staff and all the volunteers during his campaigns.
“Thank you and all the best! While I will soon cease to be your councillor, I will always be your neighbour,” he said.
Demong was first elected in Ward 14 in 2010, defeating incumbent Linda Fox-Mellway.
His departure from politics marks the fifth Calgary councillor who has decided not to run in the October municipal election.
On Jan. 14, Ward 12 Coun. Evan Spencer announced he would not run in the upcoming election while later that same month Ward 3 Coun. Jasmine Mian said she was also not seeking re-election.
Last month, Courtney Walcott announced he would not be running either. Ward 3 Coun. Sean Chu will also not be running.
There is one constant in this life, and that is change.
