Pedestrian hospitalized after being hit by garbage truck in downtown Calgary

Woman hit by garbage truck in downtown Calgary Police responded to downtown Calgary after a woman was hit by a garbage truck on Tuesday morning. Mason DePatie reports.

A pedestrian was rushed to hospital after she was hit by a garbage truck in downtown Calgary on Tuesday.

The collision happened near Fifth Street and Eighth Avenue S.W. around 6:30 a.m.

Police believe the woman was crossing Eighth Avenue when the garbage truck turned eastbound from the southbound lane and hit her in the crosswalk.

The woman was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.

The intersection was completely blocked to vehicle traffic.

A big dent could be seen on the front bumper of the garbage truck and there was clothing and other debris visible behind the truck.

Police are investigating and spoke to several witness at the scene.

The driver of the truck remained on scene and was not injured.

Police say impairment and excessive speed are not considered factors in this crash.
