Oscar-nominated short films to be screened at Globe

Published:

Over the next two weekends, the Globe Theatre will be screening Oscar-nominated short films. CTV's Ian White speaks to Calgary International Film Festival artistic director Brian Owens.

Best picture, best actor, even best screenplay – many of us feel confident about our Oscar ballot picks.

But animated short, live action short and documentary short, that’s where it gets challenging.

The Calgary International Film Festival is running to the aid of local film fans by showing these niche films over the next two weekends at the Globe.

“These are the stepping stones or the initial blocks for those filmmakers that are going to make Conclave or Emilia Perez,” CIFF artistic director Brian Owens told CTV News.

“I’ve been programming films for about 25 years and I had a short film by Denis Villeneuve when I was in Nashville. So this is really how you see these rising stars as filmmakers,” said Owens.

The short films will be shown the weekends of February 14 – 16 and February 21 – 23 at the Globe Cinema.

“The nice part about that is you pay one ticket price and you get to see five movies. If you don’t like one, you’ll probably like the next one,” said Owens.
