Migraine Canada updates treatment guidelines

Published:

Dr. Farnaz Amoozegar, a neurologist at the University of Calgary, joins Ian White to discuss Migraine Canada’s updated treatment guidelines.

Migraine Canada has updated its treatment guidelines for the first time since 2012, giving patients some hope the condition can be treated with more effective medication.

“There is definitely hope. We don’t have a cure yet for migraines, but these medications significantly improve quality of life and reduce migraine burden,” Dr. Farnaz Amoozegar told CTV News.

Amoozegar is a neurologist and clinical assistant professor at the University of Calgary.

She was part of the panel that explored dozens of treatments for migraines, which afflict 15 to 18 percent of people worldwide.

Amoozegar acknowledges migraines are even worse in Calgary.

“In Calgary, there has been an association noted with weather changes and chinooks, so potentially there is a higher prevalence, but we actually have not done specific studies to look at each city across Canada, for example, to know how much higher it is,” she said.
