Impaired driving likely to blame for multi-vehicle crash in southwest Calgary

Calgary police say an impaired driver was arrested following an early morning crash that sent a pair of vehicles into a building on 17 Avenue S.W.

Emergency crews were called to the scene of a multi-vehicle crash involving a building on Tuesday that police say is likely due to impaired driving.

The incident happened shortly before 5 a.m. near the intersection of 17 Avenue and 14 Street S.W.

The crash involved an SUV and a truck. The first vehicle sustained heavy damage to its front, while the truck was flipped onto its side.

Officials say one of the vehicles ended up being pushed into a nearby building.

The business, a pizza shop, has broken windows and damage to its front wall. Fire crews have yet to assess the building for structural damage.

Police said one person was taken to hospital for precautionary care.

One driver was also arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while impaired.

The intersection has been closed down for the police investigation.
