Airdrie RCMP are advising that road conditions are very poor Saturday afternoon.

Gusting north winds and blowing snow have caused multiple collisions on the QEII, they said in a media release.

The southbound lanes of the highway in Airdrie were blocked, and traffic was at a standstill around 12:30 p.m.

Calgary EMS said the collision involved 15 vehicles and they transported five adults listed in stable, non-life threatening condition to either the Airdrie Urgent Care Centre or hospitals in Calgary.

One child was also transported to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in stable non-life threatening condition.

At the time of the collisions, roads were icy and visibility was very poor, with white-out conditions.

Several hours later there were still long lines of traffic in the southbound lanes.

Motorists are being asked to avoid travel if possible.
