Charges laid after thieves broke into Douglasdale home while residents were sleeping

Three people face charges after thieves broke into a Douglasdale home last weekend, stealing several items while residents were sleeping.

Three people are facing charges after thieves broke into a Douglasdale home last weekend, stealing several items while the residents were sleeping.

Police say several suspects were car prowling in the neighbourhood around 1 a.m. on March 9. They found a remote garage door opener, which they used to get into a garage of a home in the 3500 block of Douglas Woods Heights S.E.

Two suspects then entered the home through an attached door while the homeowners and guests were sleeping and proceeded to steal a purse, electronics, silver collectible coins and a Jeep Wrangler.

Officers patrolling the neighbourhood found the Jeep abandoned in the community just after 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Police tracked the suspects to a nearby London Drugs after they saw a stolen Acura MDX that was used during the break-and-enter.

A man and woman, both from Calgary, were arrested in connection with the break-in. Throughout the investigation, police seized:

  • A 2014 Jeep Wrangler;
  • A 2009 Acura MDX;
  • Stolen property from the break-and-enter;
  • Additional stolen property, including personal identification documents;
  • A sawed-off shotgun;
  • Ammunition;
  • Two knives;
  • A small amount of crystal meth and suspected fentanyl;
  • A scale;
  • Break-in tools;
  • A clown mask; and
  • Cash and gift cards.

The man, 26, is facing 31 criminal offences related to break-and-enter, possession of stolen property, weapons and drugs.

The woman, 24, is also facing 10 charges related to weapons and break-and-enter.

They are scheduled to appear in court on March 19.

A third man, 31, who police say was with the others at the time of the break-in, was also arrested and charged. He is also facing seven weapon and break-in-related charges.

He is scheduled to appear in court on March 21.
