Officials with the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo have unveiled changes to the facility’s popular African Savannah exhibit, which is home to zebras, giraffes and ostriches.
An outdoor area previously called Savannah Yard has been transformed with new landscaping, and 220 feet of custom-engineered fencing with mesh – designed with animal welfare and well-being in mind.

The area also has two new viewing areas where visitors can observe the animals.
The area been renamed Savannah Plains.
Another area that underwent a transformation is the former Savannah Barn.

The area is home to a new 4,445 square-foot building – called Savannach Crossing – which features a 560-square-foot exterior courtyard, an interior habitat and a visitor viewing area.
Officials say both areas were originally built in 1993, upgraded in 2022 and “due for a transformation.”

“Savannah Crossing and Savannah Plains have been designed to deepen our visitors’ connection with wildlife, showcasing the dynamic relationships between species in spaces that reflect their natural environments,” said Kyle Burks, the zoo’s president and CEO.
“Every step of this project reinforces our commitment to exceptional animal care, conservation education, and inspiring people to take action for wildlife.”

The revamped areas open to the public on Friday.
