A Calgary Police Service officer has been charged with perjury and fabricating evidence.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said it was directed to investigate the officer regarding evidence they provided during an off-duty legal proceeding.

“The evidence gathered during ASIRT’s investigation provided reasonable grounds to believe that an offence had been committed,” ASIRT said in a Friday news release.
The investigation was subsequently forwarded to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) to assess the evidence.
The ACPS said the evidence met their standard for prosecution, and after reviewing the investigation, ASIRT determined the officer should be charged.
On Jan. 29, Joseph Barton was charged with perjury and fabricating evidence. He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on March 6.
ASIRT said since the matter is before the courts, no further information will be released.
