A townhouse complex, which was bought by the City of Calgary to build the Green Line LRT, was destroyed in a fire on Jan. 28, 2025.

A townhouse complex, which was fenced off to be demolished for Calgary’s Green Line LRT, was destroyed in a two-alarm fire on Tuesday night.

At 9 p.m., the Calgary Fire Department was called to the property in the 100 block of Second Street S.W.

When they arrived, they could see flames and heavy smoke coming from the building.

Firefighters conducted a search and found no one inside nearby units, but heavy flames prevented them from searching the home where the blaze broke out.

Officials called for a second alarm, due to the severity of the fire.

“Fire had spread throughout the entire unit and crews fought the fire from the outside,” the CFD said in a news release. “The portion of the complex on fire was the last to be demolished on site and was slated for demolition this week.”

Once the fire was extinguished, crews remained on scene to work with contractors to bring down the rest of the damaged structure.
