A potent spring ice storm is on the way, with Environment Canada warning of potentially dangerous conditions across Simcoe County and Muskoka starting Friday and lasting through Monday.

The weather agency says the region could see five to 15 millimetres of ice build-up from freezing rain, with some areas possibly receiving more than 20mm. Snow and ice pellets could add another five to 15 centimetres, particularly in central and northeastern Ontario.

The combination of ice and strong winds could lead to downed trees, power outages, and hazardous travel conditions, making it a storm residents should consider preparing for.

What to Expect

Icy roads and sidewalks: Freezing rain will make driving and walking extremely slippery.

Power outages possible: Ice buildup on power lines could leave some residents in the dark.

Tree damage: Heavy ice has the potential to cause branches to snap.

Environment Canada expects the storm to be widespread and prolonged, with meteorologists closely monitoring which areas will be hit hardest. The highest risk for major ice accumulation currently lies between Parry Sound and Kingston.

The national weather agency advises avoiding travel if possible, ensuring devices are charged and flashlights are ready, and stocking up on essentials like food, water and batteries.

Environment Canada expects to issue weather warnings for specific areas as the storm approaches.
