Police charge man with dozens of counts of fraud and theft

Published:

Police have laid charges in a major fraud investigation in Newmarket.

After their mail went missing, several Newmarket victims contacted the York Regional Police last December.

In particular, various banking and identification documents had gone missing from their mailboxes.

Shortly after, police say bank accounts and credit cards were established in the victim’s names.

Police arrested a 40-year-old man of no fixed address Monday.

Police say at the time of his arresting, “an overwhelming amount of identification and other fraudulent documentation was located.” None of it was in the man’s name.

He has been charged with a slew of charges including seven counts of fraud over $5,000, six counts of obtaining credit by falsifying documents, six counts of identity theft and fraud, as well as possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Now investigators are releasing an image of the man, known as Jiaming Wang, in an appeal to other fraud-related incidents they believe might be connected to Wang.

Anyone with information is asked to call York Region Police at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7141 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
