Residents in Bracebridge and surrounding areas are being warned about potential flooding as warmer temperatures and rain increase runoff into lakes and rivers. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) issued a flood outlook bulletin for the Bracebridge-Minden-Parry Sound district, in effect until March 21.

Officials say water levels in most lakes are currently at or below seasonal targets, but with rain in the forecast and ongoing snowmelt, conditions are expected to change rapidly. The Black River and Muskoka River watersheds are among the areas that could see rising water levels and fast-moving currents, increasing the risk of localized flooding.

Property owners in flood-prone areas are advised to take precautions, including securing items near the water, ensuring sump pumps are in working order, and take caution as lower-lying areas may experience water pooling and overflow.

Environment Canada has also issued a special weather statement for the region, warning of significant rainfall this weekend, with between 20 to 40 millimetres of rain expected from Saturday evening through Sunday night. Heavy downpours and thunderstorms could worsen conditions, leading to water pooling on roads and potential flooding in low-lying areas.

Officials urge residents to stay safe near waterways as ice thins and current strengthen. Parents are reminded to keep children and pets away from riverbanks, lakes and drainage ditches.

The Town of Bracebridge’s Public Works crews are actively monitoring the situation, clearing catch basins and checking known trouble spots.
