Residents in north Simcoe are being warned about a phishing scam targeting victims through fraudulent text messages pretending to be from the RCMP.

Ontario Provincial Police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) are urging the public to be cautious after reports of fake “delivery notices” claiming to be from the national police service.

According to the authorities, the scammers send a text message informing recipients the RCMP was unable to deliver court documents. The message includes a link to a fake website where users are asked to reschedule the delivery to avoid missing a court date.

“This is a scam!” OPP warned, adding that the RCMP does not send delivery notices by text.

“No matter your level of cyber fitness, fraudsters will stop at nothing to steal from their victims. Your best protection against cyber threats is to learn more about them and the simple steps you can take to protect yourself,” OPP noted.

Police say anyone who receives these messages should delete them immediately, and never click the link.

"If you clicked on a link or provided personal details via the fraudulent website, contact your financial institution immediately and report it to your local police service and the CAFC," OPP stated.
