South Simcoe police are investigating an incident that caused significant damage to the Highway 400 bridge at the Innisfil Beach Road interchange in Innisfil.
Police say an excavator with an oversized load struck the bridge on Friday and left the scene.
According to police, charges are pending.
Structural engineers inspected the bridge and found localized concrete damage to three of its support beams.
While police say the damage doesn’t impact vehicles travelling along Highway 400, the Innisfil Beach Road bridge is closed to ensure public safety.
The Ministry of Transportation is coordinating repairs and assessing whether the road can be partially reopened while work is being completed.
Officials say they will reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so.
