Barrie, Ontario — Lawyers for the prosecution and defence attended the Police Services Act proceedings for Insp. Valarie Gates Thursday and Friday morning to respond to separate counts of discreditable conduct against the Barrie Police officer.
According to the lawyers, further disclosure from investigators with Ontario Provincial Police is still being provided to the prosecution and defence.
Insp. Gates was first charged with discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act 13 months ago following an investigation conducted by the Ontario Provincial Police Office of Professionalism, Respect, Inclusion and Leadership. Half a year later Gates was charged with a second count in June 2024
Barrie Police confirmed both counts relate to alleged on-duty, internal incidents.
Insp. Gates is a 27-year police veteran with the Barrie Police Service and remains active with the service.
