Barrie organization set to transform community support into social enterprise thrift store

A grassroots organization in Barrie unveiled their plans for a new thrift store that will provide free essentials for those in need

A local organization is taking strides to support families in need right here in our region.

What started as a grassroots initiative of neighbours supporting neighbours has grown into quite the network… providing grocery gap shops, seasonal clothing, and crisis assistance to those in need.

On Thursday, Barrie Families Unite took it one step further and hosted a special open house to showcase its ‘Doors to Dignity’ seed funding campaign, which aims to raise half-a-million dollars to open a social enterprise thrift store in the community.

Alex Nutall, Barrie mayor, made an appearance, taking the time to learn about the group’s framework and exciting plans.

The open house highlighted the organization’s vision for the store, which has a goal to provide affordable, and, in some cases, free essentials for vulnerable families right here in Barrie.

More than just a thrift store, members say it will serve as a hub for connection, skill-building, and sustainability, helping to bridge the gap for those who need it most.

Through referrals, people of all walks of life facing economic hardship will have the pleasure of shopping for items that meet their needs, allowing them to explore independence and choice.

The grassroots organization has built strong collaborations with many local groups, including the Women and Children’s Shelter, Busby Center, CMHA, Salvation Army, Christmas Cheer, CATULPA, Empower Simcoe, Ryan’s Hope, and many more.

Barrie Families Unite embodies the essential work these organizations do, ensuring more families in the community can receive the support they need and deserve.
