Rum Ragged is bringing their high-energy take on traditional folk music to the Maritimes this week.

The Juno-nominated band, which was formed more than a decade ago, is known for its rich harmonies and storytelling.

“We’re a Newfoundland traditional group and we have a bunch of different instruments, the accordion, fiddle, bodhran, bouzouki, banjo,” said band member Aaron Collis.

Rum Ragged’s latest album, “Gone Jiggin’,” came out in April 2024 and features traditional Newfoundland music, plus a few contemporary songs. The group is currently promoting the album on a cross-Canada tour that includes four stops in Nova Scotia this week:

  • Thursday at Place des arts Père-Anselme-Chiasson in Chéticamp, N.S.
  • Friday at the Light House Arts Centre in Halifax, N.S.
  • Saturday at the Chester Playhouse in Chester, N.S.
  • Sunday at the deCoste Performing Arts Centre in Pictou, N.S.

“We’ve been lucky to play Halifax a few times, but this one is going to be the biggest show we’ve ever done here. I’m really looking forward to it,” said Mark Manning.

When asked what concertgoers can expect from a Rum Ragged show, Manning promised good songs and good stories.

“A bit of fun, maybe a bit of dancing,” he added.
