A new documentary is exploring the impact and legacy of a Black golf tournament in Nova Scotia.
The Apex Invitational Golf Tournament, which started in 1974, was the first Black golf tournament in Nova Scotia. It began as a small gathering in Truro, but has grown into a long-running tradition.
Filmmakers Amy Mielke and Brittney Gavin created the documentary, “Apex: The Black Masters,” capturing its 50th anniversary last August.
“We have a few key voices in the documentary, but kind of one of our rules while we were making this film was that we wanted the community to be the main character,” said Gavin, whose family is from Truro.
“It’s about a homecoming,” Mielke said. “It’s about golf, but it’s also about so much more than golf. It’s about kind of breaking barriers and it’s also a story of joy and celebration.”
The documentary will be available to stream on Jan. 31.
“I’m happy to just shine a light on a community that I’m super proud to be connected to,” Gavin said.
