Summerside advises residents of rotational power outages, asks them to conserve electricity

Published:

Residents in Summerside, P.E.I., are being asked to conserve energy after a large power outage on Monday.

The City of Summerside, P.E.I., is advising residents they could be impacted by rotational power outages Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning to help manage power loads.

The outages are expected to start around 5 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m.

“Meaning that if your power goes out, it will remain off for approximately two hours before being restored, following the scheduled rotation,” reads a news release from the city.

Rotational power outages will resume Wednesday between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., according to the city.

“Due to the complexity of electrical reliability and multiple unknown factors, we are unable to provide a set schedule for the rotations at this time. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to restore stability,” reads the city’s news release.

Conserving energy

The city is once again asking power customers to also conserve their electricity following a large outage Monday morning.

More than 19,000 Maritime Electric customers across western P.E.I. were impacted at the height of the outage.

The utility said the issue originated from a transformer at the Sherbrooke substation.

The city told residents there would be “ongoing electricity interruptions” Monday night due to the damage at the substation which required “urgent repairs.”

In a Tuesday morning update, the city said there were no circuit interruptions throughout the night.

Residents are being asked to conserve electricity between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday.
