Islanders who plan to move to Belgium can now skip a few steps in order to exchange their P.E.I. driver’s licence.

P.E.I. Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Ernie Hudson recently met with Patrick Guido M. Van Gheel, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium. During Van Gheel’s official visit to the Island, the two reached a driver’s licence reciprocity agreement.

“This agreement reflects our commitment to a strong and lasting relationship with Belgium,” said Hudson in a news release.

Under the agreement, P.E.I. drivers can exchange their Class 5 (passenger vehicle) and Class 6 (motorcycle) licences for the same licences in Belgium without needing to take any tests or training.

“It supports the transition for Islanders moving to Belgium, making it easier for them to get on the road, buy a vehicle, and settle into their new communities,” said Hudson.

Licensing rules between P.E.I. and Belgium are similar. This agreement builds on a previous deal from 2022, which allowed Belgians moving to P.E.I. to exchange their licences without issue.

The Belgian driver’s licence is now recognized in every province except for Manitoba.
