Maritime Electric says it should have enough of an energy supply for all its customers Wednesday night as repairs continue on a substation in western Prince Edward Island.

β€œMaritime Electric has updated Summerside Electric Utility that we will continue operating our dispatchable on-Island generation and will be utilizing all available wind generation to meet the needs of our customers and to also support their energy supply needs,” reads a social media post by Maritime Electric just after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

However, customers, especially those in Prince County, are still being asked to conserve their energy during peak times.

The City of Summerside advised residents on Tuesday they could be impacted by rotational power outages that evening and Wednesday morning to help manage power loads.

However, the situation later changed and it was determined the outages were no longer needed.

The conservation efforts follow a large power outage Monday morning.

More than 19,000 Maritime Electric customers across western parts of the island were impacted at the height of the outage.

The issue reportedly originated from a transformer at the Sherbrooke substation.

Maritime Electric says technicians have been working since Monday to make repairs.

β€œCrews built an enclosure to protect the unit from the elements. In order to determine the root cause of the issue, we are isolating, inspecting and testing individual pieces of equipment within the transformer unit,” it said in a social media post.

The utility will provide another update on the situation at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
