The Charlottetown Fire Department is urging residents to stay off ice.

The fluctuating temperatures have led to unstable ice conditions and, according to the fire department, it is currently not safe to be on ice. Therefore, residents should avoid ice surfaces such as harbours, rivers, streams, creeks and ponds.

The fire department says slippery banks and fast-moving cold water can also be hazardous.

“With water temperatures at or below zero degrees Celsius, loss of dexterity can occur in as little as two minutes. Exhaustion and hypothermia can occur in less than 15 minutes,” reads a news release from the City of Charlottetown.
