Popular N.S. Chickenburger celebrates 85 years of business

Canada's oldest drive-in diner is celebrating a major milestone

The Chickenburger first opened its doors in 1940 in Bedford, N.S., and people have been loyally coming in ever since.

The drive-in restaurant recently celebrated its 85th anniversary, welcoming customers new and old to mark the major milestone.

“From my understanding this is the oldest drive-thru that’s still open in Canada,” said Matt Street, director of operations.

One of the restaurant’s signature items is the chickenburger, which has not changed much in nearly a century.

“The chickenburger recipe is the same,” Street said. “We are not changing the chickenburger. It’s an iconic sandwich in Nova Scotia.

“People want to have that same experience they come in. We work very hard to make sure the chickenburger someone had 10 years ago or 20 years ago or 50 years ago is the same chickenburger we sell today.”
