The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) says a police officer won’t be charged in connection with a man’s arrest and injury in Dartmouth, N.S., last year.

Officers with Halifax Regional Police responded to a call of a wanted man who was spotted in the Wyse Road area on Dec. 11, 2024.

He was wanted for multiple alleged offences, including flight from police, possession of stolen property, and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

Officers also had information that he may have been involved in a stabbing.

The man reportedly fled from police who chased after him on foot.

When one of the officers caught up to him the man “positioned himself to fight” the officer.

The officer brought the man to the ground and a struggle took place as he continued to resist arrest, according to SiRT’s report.

The officer then hit the man in the face.

Other officers arrived to help arrest the man and take him into custody.

He was assessed by EHS and taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken collarbone.

SiRT received a referral from Halifax Regional Police the same day and began their investigation.

The team’s director, Erin Nauss, says she has since found no grounds to believe the officer acted with excessive force and he won’t be charged.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
