Man charged with impaired driving after woman struck and killed in Halifax

Published:

A driver has been charged in a hit and run that killed a young woman in Halifax on Monday night.

A 32-year-old man is facing four charges, including impaired driving causing death, after a 21-year-old woman was struck in a crosswalk and killed by a vehicle in Halifax this week.

Halifax Regional Police responded to the corner of Robie Street and Veterans Memorial Lane at 5:47 p.m. Monday.

Police allege the driver was travelling on Jubilee Road when he collided with another vehicle. As he fled the scene, police say he struck the pedestrian in a marked crosswalk, and then struck two parked vehicles before coming to a stop.

The driver was arrested at the scene.

The female pedestrian, identified as Alexandria Wortman, was taken to hospital, where she died from her injuries. Police confirmed her death on Tuesday.

No other details about Wortman are being provided by police at this time.

The driver, identified as Deepak Sharma, was initially facing a charge of dangerous operation of a conveyance (dangerous driving).

That charge has been upgraded and he is now facing three additional charges following the woman’s death:

-operation of a conveyance causing death

-operation of a conveyance while impaired causing death

-failure to stop after an accident resulting in death

-failure to stop after an accident

Sharma is due to appear in Halifax provincial court Friday morning.

“Halifax Regional Police extend heartfelt condolences to the woman’s family and friends,” said police in a statement Wednesday.

“Police also extend thanks to the witnesses who remained at the scene through the evening.”

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Court documents obtained by CTV News shows this wasn’t Sharma’s first run in with the law.

In the last two years, Sharma has faced offences under the Motor Vehicle Act in both Amherst and Bridgewater provincial courts in relation to his driving.
