Man charged in fatal hit-and-run collision in Cape Breton

A man has been charged in connection to a fatal hit and run in Cape Breton last week.

A 50-year-old man has been charged in connection with an alleged hit-and-run collision that claimed the life of a young woman in Cape Breton last week.

Jason Gordon Cashin appeared in Sydney provincial court on Wednesday. He has been charged with failing to stop after an accident causing death.

Cashin was remanded into custody at the Cape Breton Correctional Centre. He is due back in court for a bail hearing on March 4.

The charge comes after Cape Breton Regional Police responded to a collision on Keltic Drive in Sydney River, N.S., around 7 p.m. Thursday.

Police say a woman was struck by a vehicle, which left the scene. The woman was taken to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The woman’s family has identified her as 22-year-old Halle Sweet.

At the time, police said they were trying to identify the vehicle and driver involved in the collision.

Police said Wednesday they have seized a vehicle and continue to investigate the incident.
