Four men between the ages of 18 and 38 are facing fraud charges in connection with a “travelling home repair scam” in the Halifax area.

Halifax Regional Police received a complaint of a home repair fraud in progress on Jan. 6. Police say they received complaints about similar scams between Nov. 27, 2024 and Jan. 15.

Police allege the men were going door-to-door throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality and posing as a chimney and masonry company, using the following fictitious company names:

-Nova Construction and Masonry

-All Seasons Construction

-Firmway Construction

-Marshall’s Construction

-Rideau Masonry and Roofing

Police say the men convinced people – mostly seniors – to let them inspect their roofs and chimneys and would identify repairs they claimed needed to be made.

The group would allegedly take a large cash payment for the project, but wouldn’t return to complete the job, or would perform “subpar” work, leaving the homeowner with a damaged or partially-completed project.

Police executed a search warrant at a home on Hazelhurst Street in Dartmouth on Feb. 12 and arrested four men at the scene.

The next day, officers searched a home on Battery Drive in Halifax, where they allegedly seized documents that led them to believe the suspects were in the process of opening a new fraudulent business.

The accused are facing the following charges:

Luke Charles, 23, has been charged with fraud under $5,000 and obstructing a peace officer

Patrick Cash, 38, has been charged with fraud under $5,000 and obstructing a peace officer

Adam Lee Scott, 27, has been charged with fraud under $5,000

Dan Thomas Doran, 18, has been charged with fraud under $5,000

Police say they are all due to appear in Halifax provincial court at a later date.

The investigation is ongoing.

The charges come after the RCMP issued a warning last month about a roofing and chimney contractor scam and said they were looking for four men in connection with the scam.

At the time, they released photos of the suspects and their vehicles.

Halifax Regional Police confirmed Thursday that the cases are related.

Anyone in the Halifax area who believes they may have been a victim of a scam is asked to contact police at 902-490-5020.
