Cape Breton University’s medical school is nearing its fall opening.

Cape Breton University’s new medical school is one step closer to opening its doors.

During a housing announcement at the university on Wednesday, CBU President and Vice-Chancellor David Dingwall provided an update on the hiring process for the new medical school which, in conjunction with Dalhousie University, is set to welcome its first students in September.

“We have all the faculty hired for the first year. We’re now working on the second year,” said Dingwall.

Construction continues at the edge of campus, near the former Nova Scotia Community College Marconi Campus. Dingwall also spoke about some building changes that have taken place along the way.

“The building is proceeding well. Maybe in terms of its interior, there’s been some changes as it relates to steel and steel content, but it’s moving along quite nicely and we’re very, very pleased as to where we’re at.”

The new CBU Medical School is expected to train up to 30 students per year, with the first group scheduled to graduate in 2029.
