The Cape Breton transit system is getting $8 million for upgrades and repairs.

The Cape Breton transit system is getting more than $8 million over the next 10 years for upgrades, maintenance and repairs.

Jaime Battiste, MP for Sydney-Victoria, Mike Kelloway, MP for Cape Breton-Canson, and Mayor Cecil Clarke announced the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) will receive $8,076,520 from 2026 to 2036, according to a news release.

The municipality will get annual funding allocations through the Canada Public Transit Fund to replace or modernize public transit infrastructure.

The release says the money will also help increase the housing supply in the region as part of transit-oriented communities.

“We are committed to building high quality and affordable public transit, and this new long-term funding will make a big difference for the people living in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality,” said Kelloway in the release. “By making smart, long-term investments, we’re building a more accessible, efficient, and sustainable future.”

The federal government has spent more than $30 billion on public transit and active transportation projects since 2015.
