A Conservative New Brunswick MP won’t be running in the next federal election.

Jake Stewart, who represents the riding of Miramichi-Grand Lake, issued a statement on Facebook Thursday, saying the last 18 years in politics have taken a toll on his family and his health.

“I want you to know I have given my very best to local causes and I am forever grateful for all your support over the years from Municipal through Provincial to Federal politics,” said Stewart in the post.

“I sincerely hope to have made a real, impactful difference in our community.”

Stewart, who was nominated to run for the Conservatives in the next federal election, has been a public figure since he was elected as a councillor for the Village of Blackville in 2008.

He served as an MLA in New Brunswick from 2010 until 2021, when he won a seat in the federal election for the Conservatives.

Stewart said being a politician is “incredibly hard” on families and he looks forward to spending more time with his wife and their four children.
